Author(s): Kenneth Haynes
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Date: 2003
Pages: 225
Size: 2.33 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: British English

This is a study of the presence of Greek and Latin in British literature since the Renaissance. While the influence of Greek and Roman literature on British literature has been extensively surveyed, the role of those ancient languages themselves within modern British literature has only begun to be studied. This book is a study of the literary representation and dramatization of English in contact with Greek and Latin. [+/-]

This is a valuable book for students on literature courses that combine Classics with English or a modern language. It is full of interesting examples which open up new areas of investigation. It is also of value to Anglophone educators in the ancient languages as it will enable them to point up the influences of Latin and Greek on English. This is an inexpensive paperback edition (with corrections) of the original publication of 2003. John Bulwer, Bryn Mawr Reviews I've learned a lot from it and enjoyed the experience of reading it. If this is Professor Haynes's 'initial survey' of his field, I look forward with eager expectation to his future, fuller-length studies. Essays in Criticism

Author(s): Uta Papen
Publisher: Routledge
Date: 2006
Pages: 225
Size: 1.88 Mb

Using literacy practices in the newly independent post-apartheid Namibia as a lens through which to examine the effects of globalisation, this broad case study looks at issues surrounding tourism, state control and the new forces of consumerism. By placing literacy at the centre of an investigation into social and cultural change as experienced by individuals, Papen shows that in times of change, reading and writing are always implicated in structures of power and inequality. [+/-]

The book considers language practices that can exclude some members of Namibian society and also looks at the strategies used by local people to accommodate and even embrace the onward march of global English and the influx of foreign visitors, practices and modes of commerce and interaction.

Uta Papen
is Lecturer in Literacy Studies at the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University and a member of the Lancaster Literacy Research Centre. She is particularly interested in social and cultural aspects of literacy and in cross-cultural research on literacy and literacy education. Attention!: A military English course for NCOs (ESP)

Title: Attention!: A military English course for NCOs
Level: English for Special Purposes
Author(s): Eric Atkinson
Publisher: British Council, Poland
Pages: 123
Size: 1.02 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: British English

These materials are English for Special Purposes (ESP) materials; they are not intended to replace General English learning materials, but to complement them. To bring something extra to the students. Each unit is based around a text that concerns that topic and that serves to introduce the main lexical items associated with it. A number of language learning activities are built around each text. [+/-]

The learning activities are of four basic kinds:
• Pre-text activities
• While text activities
• Post-text activities
• Language Consolidation activities

Who are these materials for?
These material are intended for Non-Commissioned Officers, (master sergeants, sergeants and the like), who are about to go on a training course run by the British Military Advisory Training Team. They will be trained in duties performed by NATO NCOs and in how to be a trainer of other NCOs. The students should be at STANAG 2.

However, the material may be of use to other NCOs who are not going on such a training course. Though such NCOs may not need the specific language introduced in these materials, the fact that the materials are military based will prove motivating and will stimulate development in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
